Created in 1902 and made popular in 1930, the Asscher cut diamond is one the timeless and elegant diamond  cut. The design was patented by Dutch diamond artisan Joseph Asscher and furthered in fame by his brother Abraham Asscher.

What is the Asscher cut?

Asscher cut is similar to the emerald cut with only one difference -- the square shape. The Asscher cut has high crown with large step facets. With these features, the diamond has a brilliance and shine like no other diamond. The Asscher cut diamond is actually octagonal as its four corners are cropped but the cropped corners cannot be seen once the diamond is set.

Things you need to know:

• The Asscher cut diamonds tend to hide the colors of the diamonds. An ‘I’ color Asscher cut diamond would seem as an ‘H’ or grades whiter. As the diamond’s color increases the value of diamond, Asscher cut becomes one of the best cut of diamond to buy. 

• A true Asscher cut has deep pavilion cut with steeper crown angles. While this can make the face cut a bit smaller, a skilled cutter will be able to create many layers. However make sure that the jeweler does not take this as an excuse to use heavier diamond with too much weight underneath.

• The Asscher cut diamond is loved by the brides all around the world for its clean look. If you want to buy an Asscher cut, focus on the clarity. The inclusion should be the delicate, eye clean and off to the center. The majority of the Asscher cut diamond are sold in VS2 clarity or above. You can also look at the SI1 or SI2 clarity grades.

• The Asscher cut diamond is not recognized by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). It is referred as square emerald cut. An emerald cut is not faceted as the brilliant cut. The underside of the emerald cut is cut with layers and the cut corners have to be done properly.
